At the end of the 1880s, Serov worked in the Impressionist style. In this portrait of his cousin Adelaida Simonovich (1872-1945), he captures the play of light and air around the model. The seemingly unfinished brushstrokes were a conscious choice that makes the painting feel fresh and immediate.
